Thoughts- addresses workload issues by simplifying process for all. Drama teachers are concerned about only 2 internals and 2 externals due to the practical nature of performing arts however it seems lokely that an external component maybe like a portfolio, I will miss having choice and variety in standards but I think, especially after this covid year, that performance is what the majority of students want to do [not design/ technology/research/playwriting--except one or two]. Literacy if you have performed a role you DO understand the play but it takes time and effort which is not the same as being able read a play text in an exam or write a play review quickly. So if we want a measure of independent reading skills the new literacy standards seem a good option.

TOD re development of NCEA- Aspirational: creativity- educational and social good
Strategic development the Arts links in with
Mātauranga Māori
The term mātauranga Māori literally means Māori knowledge and is closely aligned to the period of pre-European contact as it encompasses traditional concepts of knowledge and knowing that Māori ancestors brought with them to Aotearoa/New Zealand..... mātauranga Māori as a field of study for a raft of topics ranging from traditional knowledge such as te reo Māori, tikanga Māori and whakapapa to more contemporary areas of study such as kaitiakitanga, the Māori performing arts, Māori identity and Māori language revitalisation which are topics which reflect and respond to a changing world.
I would like to discuss what this would look/sound/feel like.
Pathways for 21st century discussed
1.Wellbeing: Discussion - what would help :more time eg: rehearsal process - 2 hour slots/ time to build depth of understanding and aim at quality
2.Inclusion and equity
3.Coherence- skills needed but not gained due to fragmentary nature of NCEA: can they gain skills for a meaningful pathway?
Discussion - does meaningful pathway mean a job or is it more holistic [linking with well-being] eg: I may work at Foodstuffs but also have a passion for gardening, create nutritious meals, play netball, read gory horror stories and sing with the Sweet Adelines.- see also 4.
4 Pathways - not getting access to full outlets available, not relevant- personalized pathways. There are lost of pathways to a full life- just focusing on "a job" plan is rather limiting.
5. Credibility - lack of confidence in robust literacy and numeracy - how to build confidence in NCEA.
HOLISTIC change
7 changes
1- more accessible
2.-need success as Maori eg: Maori Performing Arts not NCEA AS - NEED support/resources
3.-strengthen numeracy and literacy skills- easy courses limit options and don't show if students are functionally literate; will be a standard 20 credit bundle literacy/numeracy
4. Coherence - eg - lots of standards/ too much workload for all' not deep learning; aim 20 - 2 internals/ 2 externals [choices] Can mix standards to make a course. Support ongoing coherent course design.
5.Simplify NCEA structure; remove carry over credits all 60 credits; limit resubmission - only minor NA-A - in effect from 2021 YAY but prepare for a drop as students face real deadlines.
6. Pathways- what am I learning where is taking me?
7. NCEA level 1 - reduce assessment workload; OPTIONAL; refocused as foundational course [10% it is their only qualification]
